6 Tips to Improve Your Creativity – Focus

It’s free!

In her book “Creative Collaboration” Dr. Vera John-Steiner finds that “humans come into being and mature in relation to others, new skills are acquired, participants develop previously unknown aspects of themselves, and they increase their repertory of cognitive and emotional expression.” She concludes that “social interactions are crucial,” because “they provide a non-judgmental ear for emerging ideas.”

The researchers theorize that “a moderate (vs. low) level of ambient noise is likely to induce processing disfluency or processing difficulty, which activates abstract cognition and consequently enhances creative performance.”

A study conducted by a group of American and Canadian researchers in 2009 has found that letting your mind wander may evoke a unique mental state that allows your brain to come up with more creative ideas. Letting your mind wander is often not a conscious choice, it simply happens while you’re going through menial tasks such as weeding, showering or washing the dishes. The effect it has on your creativity also seems to depend on your being unaware that you are, in fact, daydreaming.

1. Try working in a coffee shop or restaurant

Who doesn’t know the feeling: You need to come up with a great idea, solve a finicky problem or create an inspired design, but your creativity seems to have gone on vacation — without you. Everyone faces this problem at some point, which is why we’ve put together a list of six simple ways to improve your creativity, which should help you get unstuck in no time. Take a look!

Next time you have a problem that requires a creative solution, grab your laptop and www.justpaste.it/order-essay-online-review a colleague and head to the next coffee shop. Project your problem into another, far-away time or place, then open your mind map app and start scribbling down ideas. If that doesn’t work, go for a walk or start a menial task such as washing the dishes, and simply let your mind wander. Use a mobile app to capture your flashes of genius in a mind map where you can later expand them further.

A recent Stanford study has found that walking is a great way to improve creativity. It’s not about the change of scenery, though, so it doesn’t matter whether you walk on a treadmill in your office or on a nice path through the forest. According to the study, “Walking opens up the free flow of ideas, and it is a simple and robust solution to the goals of increasing creativity and increasing physical activity.”

When it comes to developing creative ideas, mind mapping is one of the most well-known techniques today. Research has found mind maps to be helpful when it comes to curing writer’s block2 and creative problem-solving3, as well as generating, visualizing and organizing ideas4. Their radiant structure enables you to develop new ideas by association and add them anywhere on the map. Additionally, they offer a visual overview of a topic that can help you see connections between ideas you might have missed otherwise.

A study from 2012 has found that a moderate level of ambient noise, which can be found in a coffee shop, quiet bar or restaurant, for instance, enhances performance on creative tasks.

4. Pretend to be someone else, somewhere else

Various studies1 have found evidence that we get better at creative problem solving when the problem is removed from us through something they call psychological distance. You can create psychological distance by projecting the problem into the distant future, by imagining it to originate in a place far away, or by pretending that the person experiencing the problem isn’t you, but somebody else entirely.

5. Use a mind map to find new ideas by association

12 language arguments to debate over Christmas dinner | OxfordWords blog

  • The opinions and other information contained in OxfordWords blog posts and comments do not necessarily reflect the opinions or positions of Oxford University Press.
  • Actually, Aunt Greta, I don’t feel so good/well.

    (2) Technically, sneaked is the correct past tense, but snuck has become such a common alternative over the last century that there’s really no going back. With any luck, the trend will have puck before it has wruck total havoc on every other verb of this kind.

Explanation: For some reason, some people seem to think that the phrase leave someone alone means something somewhat different from let someone alone. This is baseless nonsense. If family members of yours happen to number among these people, make sure to disabuse them of their error.

Explanation: Drunk is not just an adjective meaning intoxicated with alcohol. It is also the past participle of the verb drink. That means that if you are saying that some has consumed a drink, they have drunk it. This is a common mistake with other irregular verbs like sing (sung), ring (rung), and swim (swum). Egg nog is no excuse.

Explanation: While most dictionaries do not yet acknowledge that healthy has become an adverb, there’s no denying that the phrase eat healthy is far more common than eat healthily. In the Oxford English Corpus, there are 1028 examples of the former and only 405 of the latter. This discrepancy holds true for the verbs live and grow as well. Whether this is due to the fact that healthily is hard to say or the fact that advertisers have been saying it wrong for decades we may never know.

    add-post-content”>

    Answer: Either is acceptable.

My egg nog is very healthy. It’s got less/fewer calories than that pudding you brought.

Explanation: Because well is the adverbial form of good (‘He plays the piano well’), some family members may have gotten it into their heads that when reporting how you are or how you are feeling, you should say well since it follows a verb. Feel free to let these family members know that they are doubly wrong. First, these verbs are what are called linking or state-of-being verbs, so they take adjectives like good, not adverbs. Second, well is not just an adverb; it’s also an adjective meaning healthy—that’s why it’s acceptable here, not because it’s an adverb.

12 language arguments to debate over Christmas dinner

Explanation: ‘Between’ is a preposition, so it should always be followed by object pronouns. What some family members may not realize is that the rule stating that you always say ‘so-and-so and I’ only applies when this phrase is the subject of a verb. If a family member of yours is having a hard time with this, ask them what verb the phrase ‘you and I’ is performing. Go ahead, ask them.

We wouldn’t have to discuss any of this, if grammarians would just stop trying to make whom happen. English word order almost always makes whether a noun is a subject or an object perfectly clear. Somehow, as a society, we all get on despite the fact that the word you can be singular and plural, formal and informal, specific and general, subjective and objective. So to pretend that there is anything legitimately clarifying about distinguishing between a subjective interrogative pronoun (who) and an objective one (whom) is to completely ignore the reality of how English is spoken and written. All whom does is make one half of English speakers anxious that they don’t use it and the other half foolish whenever they say, And whom shall I say is calling?

    Answer: Either is acceptable.
Explanation: Okay, here we go. Lie is an intransitive verb meaning assume a horizontal position. Its past tense is lay. Lay is a transitive verb meaning put (something) down. Its past tense is laid. Because both verbs sometimes take the form lay and they mean such similar things, confusion and misuse have run rampant throughout the English-speaking world. Remind family members who confuse lay and lie that they are, in their own unique way, contributing to the end of civilized society.

Explanation: Yes, to is a preposition that introduces an object. Yes, whomever is the objective form. But the verb wants needs a subject, which would be whoever not whomever. And in fact the object of the preposition to is not just the word that immediately follows it but the entire noun phrase whoever wants more. Does your head hurt yet?

Rupert’s already drank/drunk some egg nog, Greta.

Answer: (1) Does either of you; (2) either ‘sneaked’ or ‘snuck’; (3) off to
Explanation: The word myself is primarily a reflexive pronoun, used to refer to actions that you perform on yourself, like I shot myself in the foot. You can also use it to emphasize that you are independent or alone in a particular context, like I did it myself. Some family members may maintain that using myself just for emphasis in a context where me works as well is an ‘untriggered reflexive’ to be avoided in formal writing. If so, ask them whether they are volunteering to take minutes of the meal. While this usage will be unacceptably awkward or confusing in some contexts (‘She taught myself herself’), in others like this one it’s just fine.

    Answer: Either is acceptable.

    Answer: Either is acceptable.

Oh, Margo, you should go lay/lie down then.

    (3) Unless Greta wants to know where Rupert was doing his sneaking off instead of the destination of this action, you must include to at the end of this sentence. Yes, this is a preposition. No, to where Rupert sneaked off and whither Rupert sneaked off are not viable alternatives. Come on, guys.

    Answer: go lie down

      Answer: to whoever

      I’m a little nauseous/nauseated.

Explanation: Calories are countable; thus, we say fewer calories or a smaller number of calories. Idiocy is uncountable; thus we would say less idiocy or a smaller amount of idiocy. At times we may need to refer to uncountable amounts that happen to be measured in countable things, in which case it might make sense to say in less than three hours or weighing less than two pounds, but this does not invalidate the general rule. If you have family members who insist on using less and amount with countable nouns, they may just need help with their counting skills. Let them know that children’s TV shows can be a great resource for this. Helping others is what this time of year is all about.

      Answer: Between you and me
Explanation: The word nauseous has been used to mean ‘affected by nausea’ as well as ‘causing nausea’ for almost two hundred years. According to Bryan Garner, author of Modern American Usage, the idea that nauseous strictly means ‘causing nausea’ and that those who are affected by nausea are nauseated is a distinction only maintained by ‘die-hard snoots’. Make sure the die-hard snoots at your dinner table know exactly what Bryan Garner thinks of them.

I’ll just give this to whoever/whomever wants more. Angela?

Explanation: The first option contains a good old-fashioned split infinitive, which certain family members may believe to be the grammatical equivalent of taking the Lord’s name in vain. In fact, it’s nothing of the sort. Latinists originated this idea on the principle that, since infinitives are only one word in Latin, the equivalent phrase should be treated like one word in English. If you have a family member who dislikes split infinitives, let them know that you don’t take your grammar rules from languages that can’t even get people to speak them anymore. Remember, Christmas is a time for sharing.

      Answer: Either is acceptable.

Margo, you’re here! You get to finally try/finally get to try my egg nog.

Christmas is a time to get together with family and use language with each other. Sometimes we fall into old language habits when we reunite with family, like falling back into a regional accent, gossiping with a twin in your own private language, and, of course, indiscriminate screaming. In order to make sure that your English usage stays in tip-top shape during the holidays, we’ve put together this grammar quiz to share with your loved ones.

He may be in the bathroom. We should probably leave/let him alone.

      Answer: https://www.justpaste.it/just-buy-essay-review fewer calories

Oh, sorry, I’m trying to eat healthy/healthily.

      Answer: Either is acceptable.

      Answer: already drunk
Explanation: (1) Either means one or the other not both, so it should take the singular form does, even though you are talking to two people. Many English-speakers make this mistake, even people who pride themselves on their grammar. If a grammar fiend in your family makes this error, make sure to enlighten them. They’ll thank you later.

Well, as for me/myself, I’m stuffed.

Does/do either of you know where Rupert sneaked/snuck off to/off?

Between you and I/me, Aunt Greta’s egg nog should be avoided at all costs.

    Being Yourself

  • What are They Looking For in Your Application?
  • Vatsa, an MBA blogger, who applied unsuccessfully to Wharton first round and is now applying to a number of top MBA programs second round, writes in “Where’s the “me” in my essays?” about a valuable lesson: Be yourself. Work hard to submit your best but in Vatsa’s words, “Don’t obsess about the essays.” He blames his recent Wharton rejection on trying to hard to provide what he thinks the adcom wants to read as over at this forum opposed to writing about what he wants the readers to know.

  • The Devil is in the Details
  • At the same time, he blames consultants and the forums for advising, perhaps even pressuring, him to “do something extraordinary.”

For more on writing distinctively — and honestly — please see:

    • I plead guilty to encouraging all of you to write about what is most important to you and distinctive about you. And there is no conflict between the two, even if you aren’t from the Falkland Islands. When you write about what is most important to you, you decide constantly how to portray your experiences and values. For example, are you going to say you are a South Asian engineer or are you going to describe yourself in more precise terms that will also distinguish you automatically from the thousands of engineers in South Asia who apply to MBA programs? Could you be an environmental engineer in Singapore who grew up in Gujarat?

    • Admissions: Checklist or Mosaic?

Vatsa is 100% on the money.

You don’t have to be a “mutant-zombie Antarctic explorer,” a conqueror of Mt. Everest, the holder of a dozen patents, or the winner of ironman triathlons. You have to be you. But if someone is to recognize you in your essays, choose the experiences and words that distinguish you and introduce you as an individual to the admissions committee.

When I ask admissions people what is the most common mistake applicants make, they usually respond, “Applicants write what they think we want to hear as opposed to what they want us to know.”

2012 Michigan Ross School of Business MBA Admissions Q&A with Soojin Kwon Koh and Jon Fuller Posted

Have you been trying to understand what top MBA programs look for in their applicants? Then check out the 2012 Michigan Ross School of Business MBA Admissions Q&A with Soojin Kwon Koh and Jon Fuller. You can read the transcript and access the audio of the Q&A on our website, to learn more about how Michigan Ross selects the best and the brightest.

So it’s really taking a strong, hard look at your application. Not just thinking about yourself where you are now, but relative to what you’ve submitted before. Think about how far you’ve come. And that is what we are going to look for – where you are now….We actually do admit quite a few re-applicants, though the ones that are most successful are the ones who have some significant improvements and enhancements to their candidacy over the past year.

To learn more about how to apply, or reapply to Ross check out the full transcript here. And don’t forget to also check out Accepted’s website for MBA admissions consulting and editing to help you when you apply – whether you are a first-time applicant or MBA reapplicant.

Linda Abraham: Cyril asks, “What advice would you offer to re-applicants? Does it make sense to apply early? What difference does the admissions team expect to see in this year’s application as opposed to the one they’ve rejected last year?”

Soojin Kwon Koh: We get that question on the road quite a bit. We are always welcoming re-applicants…. It shows that they’ve really thought about the school. What we encourage re-applicants to do is to look at your own application from the eyes of the admissions committee, keeping in mind that we are looking at over 3,000 applications. We are evaluating people relative to the pool…….What we are really looking for is somebody to be thoughtful about why they think they are a stronger applicant now. What have I accomplished? … If over the past year, between applications, you really haven’t done that much, then I would advise maybe waiting until round 2 instead of applying in round 1, to make sure you’ve got the enhancements strongly in place, whether it is a new test score and/or accomplishments at work, or rewriting an essay or two if you think that was the area where you may not have been as competitive…

Three short answer questions and 2 essays are required from all applicants.

    • 2016-17 MBA Application Essay Tips

    1. What are your short term goals, post-MBA?

Leadership, teamwork, ethics, and a global approach to business are essential elements of the Duke Fuqua MBA, which is why you’ll need to make sure you express your passion for these ideals in your application essays. Impress the Fuqua adcom by positioning yourself as an innovative leader and team player, as someone who can see the big picture, work collaboratively, and shape global business.

    Second Required Essay:

State what you see yourself doing immediately after you earn your MBA in terms of function and industry. If location or geography are important to your goal, include them. If you know the type of companies you would like to work for, you can include that information too, but don’t say you want to work for Company X, unless Company X is sponsoring you. Without sponsorship, a “Company X” answer is probably too narrow, but saying you would like to work for a firm like Company X would work.

My tips are in blue below.

    • Responses should use 1.5 line spacing and a font size no smaller than 10-point.

    3. Life is full of uncertainties, and plans and circumstances can change. As a result, navigating a career requires you to be adaptable. Should the short-term goals that you provided above not materialize what alternative directions have you considered?

    Required Short Answers Questions:

Why isn’t your current supervisor writing your rec? Why is there a six-month gap on your resume? Why did your grades dip during the first semester of your senior year? What are your responsibilities while working for a family business after having left a prestigious investment bank, and why did you make the change? Answering any of those questions (but not all) could be the topic of your optional essay.

In this spirit, the Admissions Committee also wants to get to know you–beyond the professional and academic achievements listed in your resume and transcript. You can share with us important life experiences, your likes/dislikes, hobbies, achievements, fun facts, or anything that helps us understand what makes you who you are. Share with us your list of “25 Random Things” about YOU.

First Required Essay: 25 Random Things About Yourself

Based on your understanding of the Fuqua culture, how do you see yourself engaging in and contributing to our community, http://www.liveinternet.ru/users/nerdymates/ outside of the classroom?

One approach to responding to this question: Address a letter to a close friend or colleague and tell her how you would contribute to this very participatory culture. That letter could morph into this essay.

    • All essays are scanned using plagiarism detection software. Plagiarism is considered a cheating violation within the Honor Code and will not be tolerated in the admissions process.

    • Prepare your responses carefully. The Admissions Committee considers your answers important in the selection process.

If you feel there are circumstances of which the Admissions Committee should be aware, please explain them in an optional essay (such as unexplained gaps in work, choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance).

    • Do not copy the essay question in the document you upload with your application.

Your long term goals should flow logically from your short-term goals. They can be fuzzier both in terms of direction and timing. But you should have them. They can, but don’t have to, include larger aspirations and present a broader perspective on where you are headed. But please don’t go so general and say something like “I aspire to be a good person” or “I strive to leave a lasting impact on my community.” Nice sentiments, but way too vague.

Have some fun with this list. It certainly allows a more creative approach than permitted by most essay prompts. Note that the questions asks you to go “beyond the professional and academic achievements listed in your resume and transcript.” So you can list your Pez collection or perhaps your brief membership in a rock band or the fact that you took violin from ages 6-18 or your membership in a gospel choir or your volunteer work in a hospital, your needlepoint, your favorite recipe or photo. Gosh the list is endless. Just let it reflect you. Think of this list as an introduction to potential friends.  For more insight into this question and the  motivation behind, please read Megan Overbay’s, the former Director of Admissions’, advice. Yes, it’s old, but I believe you will find it helpful. And very friendly.

Do your homework about Fuqua (and yourself) before responding to this question. What activities and groups appeal to you? How do you see yourself participating? Making a difference? Then look at Duke’s multi-faceted definition of “Consequential Leaders.” Which do you most identify with? Imagine how you would participate and sometimes lead. While you can reference similar activities in the past, keep the focus of this essay on what you would do at Fuqua.

    • The Optional Essay is intended to provide the Admissions Committee with insight into your extenuating circumstances only.

Instructions: Present your response in list form, numbered 1 to 25. Some points may be only a few words, while others may be longer. Your complete list should not exceed 2 pages.

If you would like professional guidance with your Duke Fuqua MBA application, please consider Accepted’s MBA essay editing and MBA admissions consulting or our MBA Application Packages, which include advising, editing, interview coaching, and a resume edit for the Duke application.
